Teeth can be filled with gold; porcelain; silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper); or tooth-colored, plastic, and materials called composite resin fillings. There is also a material that contains glass particles and is known as glass ionomer.
Silver amalgam. A silver amalgam filling has been the most recommended dental filling for many years, dating back several generations.
Composite resin. The best thing about a composite resin dental filling is that it blends in very well with natural teeth.
Cast gold.
Porcelain inlays.
Compared to composite resin, this type of filling is more affordable and offers longer-lasting results. When properly cared for, an amalgam filling can last up to 15 years. Because of the metal alloy used, amalgam fillings offer stronger resistance to damage, making then a superior choice for larger areas of decay.
